Pope Francis lamented the murder of the Tzotzil indigenous priest Marcelo Pérez Pérez, which occurred last Sunday in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, during his message after the Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace. In his words, the pontiff highlighted Father Marcelo's dedication as a “fervent servant of the Gospel and of the faithful people of God.”
Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez was shot dead in the Cuxitali neighborhood while he was in his car, minutes after celebrating a Mass. Known for his work defending indigenous peoples and his stance against organized crime violence, his tragic death has generated shock and strong condemnations both in the Catholic Church and among international organizations.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Office in Mexico expressed its sorrow for the murder and recalled that, since 2017, at least 134 human rights defenders have been killed in Mexico, including seven cases so far in 2024. This tragic event again highlights the violent situation faced by those defending peace and human rights in the country.
Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez was recognized for his tireless work in favor of justice and peace in indigenous communities in the region, as well as for his role as a mediator in conflicts in areas such as Pantelhó, where violence and insecurity have increased significantly. His sacrifice, like that of other murdered priests, has been remembered by Pope Francis as an example of commitment to Christian life and peace.
